Russia says 'short-sighted' EU has only itself to blame for energy crisis

The EU is behind the crisis, Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said on Saturday.

The global gas spill has sent imports into Europe, further rising prices and lawsuits, soon and the head of the International Energy Agency Fatih Birol, that Moscow is exacerbating the problem by banning imported goods.

Novak said Russia had fulfilled its long-term agreements with the EU. And, he added, the problem stemmed from “a brief policy by the European Union and the European Commission, which for many years deliberately left out of long-term contracts, changed its power supply to reduce reliance on switching from long-term contracts to others.”

About 40 percent of natural gas from Europe comes from Russia, but this year emissions have dropped by almost a quarter.

Novak said Russia has “a lot of economy” and could increase its spread to Europe. But this may require established agreements to boost production costs. “We have donated a lot to Germany, Turkey, to other countries that have chosen their volumes,” he said.

“Wrong planning, a short-term plan for power and the theme of European politics, which they are trying to pass on to others,” he added. Novak was speaking to a Russian television station and his comments were echoed by TASS Price.
