Richard Holden MP Fights with Unfair Petrol Prices in Consett

Richard Holden, MP for North West Durham, said supermarkets have eliminated the inefficient distribution of fuel and diesel prices between the stations that operate at Consett and neighboring Bishop Auckland.

The Morrisons have dropped prices slightly, but the MP says more needs to be done and is urging others to follow through.

The districts reached out to the local MP, Richard Holden, to point out the difference in fuel prices of more than 10p between the Consett oil refinery and Bishop Auckland – although operated by the same supermarket and 18 kilometers away. Both Morrisons and Tesco charge higher prices for petrol and diesel at Consett than at Bishop Auckland, which costs customers up to an additional £ 5 in Consett.

2022.01.07 Richard Holden MP Petrol Prices Morrisons Tesco Consett Bishop Auckland

Richard Holden MP first wrote to these major markets in February 2020 but did not respond. He re-posted the story on Twitter last week, wanting to share it with Morrison and Tesco. Yesterday they went to Parliament to condemn their unfair treatment.

First, raise the issue with the Permanent Secretary in the Business and Energy (BEIS) department at a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee. The Permanent Secretary said any valuable agreement would be illegal and should be done in depth by the Competition and Markets Authority and would ensure that the BEIS team considered the matter.

And second, Richard asked his question to the Commons Chamber and the Minister of State for Business, Energy and Clean Growth, Greg Hands MP, agreed to meet Richard at the first opportunity to discuss the price of oil.

Since the intervention, Morrisons sent Richard an email and lowered fuel and diesel prices by 1p each at his Consett location. However, he remains at the top of the trees in Bishop Auckland. Tesco has not yet responded.

Richard Holden states:

“My people are tired of being distracted by supermarkets that tear them apart with a big difference in the price of petrol between Consett and Bishop Auckland – even though the pumps are only 18 miles away.

That is why I called on Morrisons and Tesco to reverse this unjust practice.

“Thank you for Morrison lowering his price by 1p, but there is still much to be done, and I look forward to meeting with the Minister of State for Business, Energy and Clean Growth to discuss what could happen in the near future.”

“I always do my best to represent the people I live with in the event of injustice.”
