A Rhode Island man believed to have faked his death and fled the United States to escape trial in Utah and other countries has been arrested in Scotland after being hospitalized with Covid-19, authorities say.

Nicholas Alahverdian was diagnosed with a serious coronavirus and was placed in a hospital ward in Glasgow, Rhode Island State Police Major Robert Creamer told The Providence Journal Wednesday.

Alahverdian 34, wanted by Interpol, is now due to travel to the US to face a first rape case in Utah in 2008.

Unpublished court documents Thursday show that Alahverdian met a 21-year-old woman on MySpace in 2008, while living in Orem, Utah, and going by the name Nicholas Rossi, WPRI-TV reported.

The woman claimed she had terminated the relationship, but that Alahverdian was in debt, promised to pay her back and instead raped her in her home.

Utah County Attorney General David Leavitt’s office said Wednesday that DNA evidence collected at the time was not tested until 2017 as part of a government trial to test the remaining rape weapons. Utah’s testimony eventually came back as similar to the Ohio rape case.

Levitt’s office said in a statement:

Investigators also found that Nicholas Rossi had fled the country to avoid prosecution in Ohio and tried to lead investigators and government officials to other countries to believe he was dead. Rossi was found to be living under a well-known Scottish name.

Rhode Island State police have said they are wanted in the state for failing to register as criminals, while the FBI says they are wanted in Ohio on charges of taking credit cards in the name of their adoptive father and receiving more than $ 200,000 in debt.

It is not known whether Alahverdian has a lawyer; a request for comment was sent to the “Alahverdian Family Office,” which sent a notification in 2020 of his funeral and funeral procession at a church in Providence, Rhode Island.

Alahverdian has for years been a vocal critic of the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families, testifying before state lawmakers about rape and abuse while in foster care.

In 2020, he told local journalists that he had non-Hodgkin lymphoma and had several weeks to live, The Journal reported.

An autopsy report published on the internet said he had died on February 29, 2020, but by the end of last year, Rhode Island police, a former Alahverdian lawyer, and a foster family had publicly questioned whether he had really died.
