Minister to Reconsider MMG Tailings Dam Approval
Bob Brown Foundation has been vindicated in its assertion that the Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley’s decision to allow drilling and roading works on the site of MMG’s proposed tailings dam site in takayna / Tarkine was flawed, as the Minister has commenced a formal reconsideration of that decision. under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.
Following sustained pressure from Bob Brown Foundation to reconsider her decision, Minister Ley’s Department wrote to the foundation today, agreeing to this request, saying:
“I have determined that your reconsideration request meets the requirements of the EPBC Act and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Regulations 2000. Your request will be published on the Department’s website for public comment for a period of 10 days from the date of publication. I have also invited a comment on your request from relevant Ministers in accordance with the requirements of the EPBC Act. ”

“Minister Ley has made a complete mess of this. So much so that the Federal Court has imposed conditions towards saving the Tasmanian masked owl which she, as minister, failed to require of MMG, ”Bob Brown said in Hobart today.
“All work in the rainforest should stop while the mess is sorted out.”
MMG continued works today on the site both in areas subject to the approval reconsideration and in areas absent any approval at all. They were met and delayed by Bob Brown Foundation protestors.
This issue is now firmly established on the election stage.
“Labor must say what its Minister for the Environment will do to ensure MMG takes up options for toxic waste disposal outside the takayna / Tarkine. The Greens have promised to stop the rainforest destruction, ”Bob Brown said.
