Jury considering verdict in trial of Sarah Doyle

The jury in the trial of a woman accused of murdering her husband at their home in 2020 has retired to consider its verdict.

Sarah Doyle, aged 32, of The Heath, Ramsgate Village in Gorey, Co Wexford, has denied the murder of her husband Philip Doyle in the early hours of 26 January 2020. Mr Doyle was 33 at the time.

The trial at the Central Criminal Court, sitting in Waterford, has heard that, following an incident, emergency services arrived at the front garden of the couple’s home and found Philip Doyle with two stab wounds, each about 15-16cm deep, to his chest .

One of those wounds proved fatal and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sarah and Philip Doyle had been married the previous June and were together for a number of years having moved from Bray to Moneytown in Co Wexford and then to Ramsgate Village in Gorey.

The court heard that Sarah Doyle and Philip’s mother Jackie Doyle went on a night out on Saturday, 25 January, and Jackie returned earlier than her daughter-in-law. When Sarah returned a disagreement took place and Philip became involved.

Sarah Doyle told gardaí that, when she returned to the house, Mr Doyle started punching her and she went upstairs to where her mother-in-law was sleeping and started punching her. Philip Doyle then dragged her down the stairs, she told gardaí in interviews, and she got a knife in the kitchen and pointed it at him. She told gardaí that she did not mean to stab him.

The jury retired late this morning to begin considering its verdict following closing speeches by counsel for the prosecution and defense and a charge by Mr Justice David Keane.
