Singapore:

Indian drug trafficker Nagaenthran K. Dharmalingam’s appeal against his murder will be heard by five Singapore High Court judges on January 24, according to media reports.

Nagaenthran, 33, a native of India and a Malaysian citizen, is appealing the Supreme Court’s decision to bar him from prosecuting him.

The petition is due to be heard by a group consisting of Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon and Justices Andrew Phang, Judith Prakash, Belinda Ang and Chao Hick Tin, The Straits Times reported on Friday.

Represented by attorney M. Ravi, Nagaenthran pleaded not guilty to ill health in order to be considered a drug dealer. He has also asked the court to have him examined by a team of psychiatrists.

Nagaenthran was arrested in 2009 after tying heroin in his thigh. He was convicted of trafficking heroin 42.72g in 2010 and sentenced to death, which at the time was legal.

His appeals against sentencing and dismissal were dropped in 2011, the newspaper said.

In 2015, he applied for another life sentence after the law was changed to allow for further punishment. However, the high court ruled he should be executed in 2017 after considering the views of four psychologists.

Last year, Nagaenthran tried for 11 hours to protest his assassination on November 10 – and pleaded guilty to a mental illness. However, on the day of his appeal on November 9, Nagaenthran was found with COVID-19. The three judges later agreed to put him to death.

Meanwhile, the case was postponed after his lawyer, Ravi – also from India – was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The Law Society of Singapore (LawSoc) forced Mr Ravi to go on holiday from December 2 to January 13. Mr Ravi is back in action.
