Dog and man became stuck in mud on River Itchen at St Denys

A DOG has been rescued after becoming stuck in mud on a section of the River Itchen in Southampton.

Emergency services were called to the incident at St Denys slipway just after 4pm yesterday.

HM Coastguard said it received a report that a dog was stuck in the mud and that someone was going in an attempt to rescue it.

Hillhead Coastguard Rescue Team, Hamble Independent Lifeboat and Hampshire Police attended.

By the time they arrived a man and the dog had rescued themselves.

The pair were safely brought to shore.

A spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency told the Echo: “If your dog is in difficulties around the coast please do not attempt to rescue it and risk putting yourself in difficulties too.

Hamble Lifeboat added: “Hamble Lifeboat responded to the page from Solent Coastguard at 1615 on 22 June.

“The team proceeded carrying the appropriate mud rescue kit but were standing down en route as the casualty self recovered.

“This was incident number 52 of 2022 for Hamble Lifeboat.”
