
The Citizens’ Assembly on Biodiversity Loss will hold its first meeting this morning in Dublin Castle under Chair Dr Aoibhinn Ní Súilleabháin.
The Assembly is made up of 99 randomly selected Irish citizens who participate in the Assembly’s six-month program of work.
Today the assembly members will be given several perspectives and examples of what biodiversity is and its place in Ireland’s urban and rural environments.
They will also be told of ways in which Ireland’s biodiversity it is at risk and efforts to restore it.
Earlier today Dr Ní Súilleabháin told RTÉ’s Countrywide that the assembly “will make informed decisions on how our Oireachtas Government will be able to tackle the issue of biodiversity.”
“This will be an evidence based exercise, taking opinions from anyone who wants to join in and looking at data from across the globe.”
The meeting will include a video presentation from Professor Robert Watson of the Tyndall Center for Climate Change Research, as well as discussions led by academics and experts Dr Ferdia Marnell, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Professor Tasman Crowe, University College Dublin, and Professor Jane Stout, Trinity College Dublin.
Broadcaster Ella McSweeney will also address members of the Assembly encouraging them to immerse themselves in Irish nature and biodiversity over the months ahead.
